A bow type/ suspended headliner - Auto Upholstery for beginners
✅Get our courses at: www.cechaflo.com
-----------------------------
The first automobiles in the late 40s, 50s until the 70s had this kind of liners for their roof interiors. The classic VW beetle is one of this range.
I have considered it important to refresh these upholstery techniques because by this time there are car restorers that love these vintage cars.
A mock-up is of great help to understand the how-to process.
Most of the car owners want the car trimmer to replicate the same OEM design. What to do if we do not have the old headliner pattern. In a part of this video I have given the clue to pattern the panels from scratch.
As we can see the insulation padding helps to keep the rods in place making the patterning process easier. Otherwise it would be a frustrating moment.
Let's not forget the use of thin materials that could be vinyl, fabric or leather. If we use a heavy material there is a risk of headliner hanging.
Due to the car's movement and weight of the liner material, the steel rods turn over upside down. Harder rods would be the solution to avoid this issue.
A tip to keep the rods and headliner itself in place while the assembling process is the use of 2 'tensioners' in the front part and two in the rear on both sides.
These 'tensioners' are made of thin wires. One end is fastened to a little hole in the frame. The other end is fastened to the rod which is inside the listing or sleeve.
I want to underline that this video is a basic one that would take us to understand much better how to tackle a real headliner on a car.
I want to devote this video to all my UA-cam followers and unfollowers who are eager to learn this marvelous artcraft!

I have worked in car seats for 10 years in Dubai and know sewing. I want to work in your company will you help me
Dear friend, You are lucky if do upholstery work in Dubai. I am located in Mexico and never the average income in Mexico would be compared to the one in Dubai which is higher. I am a simple car upholsterer that works at home and do not have a company. I wish I would be in Dubai.
Great! Thank you!
dash not gonna fit because the leather added extra thickness to the dash. you need to sand enough materials to compensate for the extra leather.
The plastic pieces were sanded beforehand for a snug fitting.
@@Cechaflo how do you ensure the whole dash were sanded evenly since it isnt flat. is there a way to measure?
@@TomatoTomato911 The surface is evenly sanded to make the gluing process more efficient. Just enough to remove the oily film on top. The plastic part edges that would house another plastic piece should be skived with a razor and sanded just enough to let the other piece be evenly attached. It means the thickness of leather material should be considered. For instance, the recess that houses the glove box handle was sanded/scratched considering the leather thickness (1.2mm thick)ua-cam.com/video/n8uT7CvG6Z0/v-deo.htmlsi=3S9BcNOd_1qMP8rs&t=271
@@Cechaflo great info. just wondering what about areas where speakers and other parts slide in, because while the added material would not affect fitting if you trimmed the edges the dash might look slightly raised compared to the speakers which should sit flush along the dash before the added materials.
@@TomatoTomato911 Sometimes in the case of speakers, airbag lids, etc. on a dashboard it is advisable to skive very thin the leather edges where the piece would sit. ua-cam.com/video/QPC6mbmv05s/v-deo.htmlsi=Br7rduKX3ZwK17dM&t=998

I'm about to start working on an E46 sedan door panel, I will rewrap all the panels in black nappa and stiffness of leather is the first thing that is making me thing two or three times, today started removing the vinyl of the first panel to force not moving backwards
I know that this video is over 9 years old, but I've watched a bunch on how to do proper corners, for a project I'm working on, and THIS ONE is the best! For one thing, there's no annoying, blaring "music". It's also clear that this person really knows what they are doing. I don't want to say I'm a beginner, but I sew so little that I tend to forget the basics, like this as well as end up doubting myself. LOL That's why, the only thing I wish that this person did differently, was in using the paper to demo, to have the papers with its 2 sides different (color or just markings to indicate top side, bottom side) so that when putting together, we'd know if we're putting top side to top side, top side to bottom side, bottom side to bottom side. THAT is where I get confused. At least, later in the video, the real material is used, so that helps. So, all I'm making is a canopy top for one of those little folding wagons that people use when going on picnics and such. For us, we bought this one, that didn't have a canopy, to take our little doggie with us on day trips. He's old now and he won't be able to walk long distances. LOL We love our lil dogo!
